Well, except yours, firelizard5, because I know where you live (yeah, how terrifying is that...).
But they should all arrive early next week! As always, my cookie decorating skills are on par with those of a 7-year-old with shaky hands (look, I'm way better with cakes), but they all taste good. Like, real good.
Enjoy them when they arrive!
Er, pretty much what it says in the title. Cookie signups can be found here. Baking will start tomorrow!
I, for one, am super excited to have my apartment smelling awesome for a couple weeks. :)
It is, after all, that time of year. :) I've been stocking up on ingredients (and the price of butter has come down!!), and I aim to get the annual post up later this week.
Brace yourselves. It's gonna be good.
(and yes, still not dead etc, job still mostly blows except for the part where i can sleep until noon and work in my pjs, football is amazing etc)
But driving from Houston to Galveston today felt a lot like driving to the Outer Banks, just with way more (and way more insane) cars. And a metric fucktonload more commercialization along the way.
It totally felt the same, though. Flattening out, strange vegetation cropping up, marshes, bridges, signs to "Watch for ice" even though it's 80 degrees out (I totally watched out for ice anyway)... It's all the same!
oh my god you guys it's archer's baby after all
Totally squee'd like a pre-teen.
(Aaron Rodgers with Bo Ryan, coach of the Wisconsin men's basketball team, after UW beat Baylor to advance to the Elite Eight. And people say I fail at providing context!)
Just a heads up to all of the awesome people who signed up - all cookies have been shipped as of this afternoon. A couple of the time-sensitive deliveries will be... close... but I've got my fingers crossed that all will turn out well.
So keep your eyes open for boxes in your mailboxes!
(well, except for the bag of cookies that was hand-delivered today. no cookies in mailboxes for you!)
I recently joined Netflix. My folks were members once, when my sister and I were spending a summer at the cottage and needed something to entertain us, back when Netflix sent out DVDs. It lasted the trial month, and then we put it away.
But something happened recently. I got a hankering to watch a somewhat recent but cancelled TV series, and I didn't really want to buy it (though I am now reconsidering that decision because fuck, I love this show). So Netflix it was, even though I'm pretty sure the only reason I get logged out of XBox Live is that my router is about a decade old and cannot handle the insanity.
So yeah. I am on a "Chuck" bender, and I make no apologies for it. I'd forgotten just how charming that show was, and I love it to pieces. Ugh. I literally cannot stop watching it - I started on Sunday and am now about halfway through season 3. WHAT AM I DOING WITH MY LIFE JESUS CHRIST STOP ME NOW.
Actually, don't stop me, Jesus. I like this shit.
PS - Cookies?
Coming soon: COOKIES. Well, the sign-up, at least.
(Also, still not dead. ;) Still watching football obsessively, not baking as much because life in a third-floor apartment is hot and not in the fun way except it's cold now so yay!, work is... interesting. Feel free to ask further questions.)
Two computer-related notes:
1. I no longer remember any passwords. Christ almighty.
2. Re-customizing software is a bitch.
One non-computer-related note:
In response to the UW-ASU officiating travesty this past weekend, the B1G apparently told Northwestern that the visiting Washington Huskies football team was no longer welcome to use the Northwestern training facilities. LOL.
However, the Arafes app (while greatly improved over last year) has limited the solo choices. HOW DARE YOU LIMIT MY VOTE, JOHNNY. I HAD SPECIFIC SOLOS IN MIND THAT NEED TO BE REVISITED.
Sigh. Back to being a productive adult.
Is this thing on?
So, yeah. How's things?
The Lannisters emerged triumphant.
Shut up, it looks cooler. I'm actually just sad there's no Baratheon option, because future seasons will have even fewer Baratheons to celebrate. :(
(Also, I'm not dead, just not posting much. I'll, err, try to get on that?)
Truly shocking news, I know.
So all but one box of cookies has been sent, and one remains to be hand-delivered (firelizard5, see your email, which you will probably do before you see this. If not, you can keep reading.). I hope they get/got there safely and that they don't suck. :)
In totally other news, I got another cold when flying - and it appears that I'll be getting another one within the week. I have to get to Florida for my grandmother's funeral at some point. My mom called this morning and apologized for it being early (it was 11:30 am...), which she never does. That was clue number 1. From what I could wrangle out of her before the sobbing began (from her), nothing has been determined yet. Woo. What fun. It'll be like a family gathering, except my sister's in Australia for "school". I'm not sure if anyone actually bothered to tell her until I sent an email early this afternoon, asking if she wanted me to get a flower arrangement or something similar. Flying back from Australia would be massively expensive and pretty unreasonable, consider that we didn't really know Grandma all that well. She'd been senile for well over a decade (Alzheimer's), so she assumed that my sister and I were still high school roommates (in fact, we have never shared a room).
But Grandma was a tough old broad, and she passed at the age of 92.
Well, I think she did. I may have hallucinated the whole thing, because I have heard nothing at all from any family member all day. But my phone indicates that I did get a call from my mom this morning, so hooray. Plane rot, version 3, coming soon to a Kleenex box near me.
So I got an early Christmas present (i.e., it was shipped to a local store so I didn't have to haul/ship it across half the country).
It's a KitchenAid stand mixer. I am so in love with this thing, you have no idea. It's just... perfect. Man.
I feel like I need to name it. The early leading candidate is "Helo", but I'm totally willing to take suggestions. Thoughts?
So the University of Arizona has been somewhat up my ass recently, whether it's asking for money (LOL, no.) or trying to get me to fill out the exit survey. The one I filled out five and a half years ago, describing my hideous experience there.
Well, today I found out why.
As part of that review process, and much in keeping with our desire to solicit input from our alums, we would greatly appreciate your filling out the attached UA Classics M.A. Program Survey, even if you have previously done so (a file containing all the surveys completed by M.A. recipients between 2005 and 2012 has been lost).
Ahahahahahaha. Whoever erased that file effectively destroyed all records of every dissatisfied class in UofA Classics history. Well played, morons.
I've put Christmas music in with my usual mix to get me in the mood to bake. It's also gotten me in the mood for snow, which is NOT HAPPENING HERE BECAUSE IT'S 70 BLOODY DEGREES.
Happy frigging December. Yeah, let's go cut a Christmas tree in shorts and flip-flops. What fun.
I can't even drink a proper cup of hot cocoa, because I haven't been cold since I was in Wisconsin last year.
I'm currently watching the Patriots/Texans game, and it's a shitshow. The Texans appear to be incapable of defeating a quality opponent on national TV. Sucks to be them. Also, go Packers!
I'm sure other things have happened since I last posted - like me downloading the hideously overpowered Mechromancer pack for Borderlands 2, ZOMG; I thought I was good at the game, but then I turned on my other playthrough in "True Vault Hunter" mode and nope, I'm not good at it at all, must be the DLC - but who knows.
I did mostly finish shopping for my sister's Christmas presents today. I like buying her gifts, because she only ever wants books. And when I buy her books, I sneak in a couple for me, as well. Yay! It's pretty bad, though, because I really want to read her books. I may have to beat her up for them after Christmas. I do know where she lives, and it's a pretty easy drive... Hmm... Intriguing.
PS. You know you want some.
HOLY SHIT TAKE BACK OMEGA DLC FOR ME3 WHAT DO I DO WITH MY LIFE I DON'T HAVE THE TIME FOR THIS.
brb, foregoing sleep forever.
So yeah. I won't be reading LJ tomorrow, if only to avoid GRRM's gleeful fanboying. Ugh. Talk about a disgusting weekend for football.
Brace yourselves. It's after Thanksgiving... which means that cookies are around the corner.
Me: I'd like an (unnecessarily complicated drink order)
Barista: Okay, that's one (unnecessarily complicated drink order). Would you like another one for free?
Me: side-eyes the speaker box ... Sure?
Randomly hitting Starbucks when they've got seasonal drinks BOGO is awesome.
So is moving, which I'm doing tomorrow. Guess how much I've packed? NOT MUCH. GAH. Well, I never unpacked everything when I moved into this place; it was always going to be a shorter-term move, and I don't really have the bookshelf space for everything I wanted to put up. So I'm more packed than I make out - but of the things that I actually did unpack, I'm maybe half-packed... and that's a very generous estimate.
Work is going well. My various reviews have gone well, and I've managed to make several good acquaintances. Time will tell if friends develop. It's hard when you work at home, but the flexibility in things like wearing pants is amazeballs.
I took my sister out to dinner at the Olive Garden the other night because she was feeling nostalgic and wanted "good" Italian food. Things were fine up through the salad and breadsticks, but as the actual entrees drew nearer, I could almost reach out and touch her crushing disappointment. She used to love the Olive Garden in high school, so she had fond memories of the food and the atmosphere and wanted things to be pretty much the same. As it turns out, they were exactly the same... but her tastes had (shocker!) developed. I felt pretty bad about the whole thing, to be honest, because I was the one encouraging her to come out and eat dinner (IN FAIRNESS, she flipped her shit when she learned that I lived near an Olive Garden, not realizing that the food at said restaurant has never ever been good). I wonder if she ate the leftovers.
I can't decide whether I'm more excited about Falling Pipe on VS Arashi with Toma (literally everything in that phrase is perfect) or AC3 multiplayer (event bonuses! hookers in colonial Boston! KILLING PEOPLE IN THE NORTHWEST PASSAGE!). I love things.
And in conclusion, fuck Wisconsin football.
